What is a Microwave capacitor?  How Does it work?

A capacitor that stores large amounts of electricity. If your microwave is unplugged, still a capacitor can work. Keep in mind that it must be discharged before beginning any repair. A capacitor is discharged by connecting each of the two capacitor terminals and each terminal to the chassis.

As an electrical component, a microwave capacitor works by drawing energy from a battery and storing the energy. The terminals inside connect to two metal plates separated by a non-conducting material. When turned on, a capacitor releases electricity in a fraction of a second.

Capacitor controls the over electricity and protects your microwave oven from any problem. Sometimes the electricity power is so high that it can harm your oven.  Capacitor saves from that high power.

If a transformer-capacitor-diode powers the oven, a high ohm resistor is also in the circuit to bleed off the charge and avoid accidental discharge when the oven is switched off. This has been known to fail in the past. Apart from that, it is safe not to charge the capacitor outside the oven.

High voltage capacitors are rarely used in modern electronics, especially battery-operated ones, but some circuits, such as the microwave and old tube radios and televisions, are still used.

If not handled appropriately, any capacitor that can be charged to a voltage level of more than roughly 100V might produce a shock. There is a known example in which a worker discharged a capacitor that had been left outdoors for several years after it had last been used and died as a result.

Testing a Microwave Oven Capacitor 

Note: Before testing any microwave components, ensure the equipment is unplugged and the high voltage capacitor is discharged.

  • A microwave’s high voltage capacitor is rated in microfarads, which are one or less and up to 2100 volts.
  • That reading can be found on the tag on the side of the capacitor. We are using an analog meter calibrated to R x 10K. To test the capacitor, use the 10K setting once more.
  • Check your meter’s accuracy. Place one of the meter leads at the capacitor’s terminals; then, while gazing at your meter, place the other lead inside the capacitor to search for a guide.

When you notice that leap, switch your meter leads around, and you should see a larger jump. If the high voltage capacitor jumps and the meter stays up, the capacitor is shorted. If there is no movement, the capacitor is open. It’s not a bad idea to double-check each terminal on the capacitor. You were looking for a way to shorten one side.

How to Discharge a Microwave oven’s Capacitor 

When the capacitor is not working or seems difficult, it must charge or discharge it as soon as possible.

Discharging your microwave’s capacitor is not easy as it can damage your microwave and yourself. You know when your microwave is disconnected, it is the capacitor that can store a huge amount of electricity that must be discharged before you make any repairs.

Follow these things to discharge the capacitor line by line:

  • First, check the capacitor.
  • Now create a short circuit between each of the two capacitor terminals.
  • There should be some space between each terminal and the chassis. The chassis is the capacitor’s metal mounting.
  • Connect one terminal to the blade of a  screwdriver while your microwave is unplugged. Then slide the screwdriver forward slowly.
  • It may hit the opposite terminal, then hold it in place for a few seconds.
  • Be careful always as it is an electrical component.

Another option for discharging a capacitor is to use an incandescent light bulb capable of withstanding the voltage held in the capacitor. Connect this to the light, and the capacitor will be discharged once the bulb is no longer lit.

Repeat the operation to make a short circuit between each capacitor terminal and the chassis.  The same method may be used to calculate the capacitance of a capacitor with three terminals rather than two.

Automatic discharge 

When possible, use bleeder resistors that are permanently linked. Separate bleeders should be used for series capacitors.

So it is a must for the Automatic shorting devices to utilize when it is de-energized. Also, when the enclosure turns open. To discharge a capacitor, time is necessary for safe voltage up to 50 volts. It should not be longer than the time required for employees to access voltage terminals. It has to be in 5 minutes.

The equipment for storage energy greater should be greater than 5 J. An automatic mechanical-discharging system operates when normal access ports are opened. Capacitors should be kept within an

effective process to ensure wiring integrity. For this, it must be visible to anyone entering the barrier. Protection against the discharge hazard is also required.

How can You make Capacitor Safe?

To make the capacitor safe, you must do these types of voltage measures after it’s supposedly discharged just to be safe.

Safety grounding 

Keeping the capacitors safe when it is working is important.  You may provide manual grounding devices that are fully visible. To avoid transferring charges from one capacitor to another, clearly designate grounding locations and exercise caution.

Be numerous enough to ground all properly.

A capacitor that can store the current to 500  or less has to be a discharge point. It should be supplied in equipment with a stored energy of more than 5 J. Your discharge point should be marked with a yellow circular marker with a red slash and labeled in large.

 The current-limiting discharge point that can control the current flow should be attached to a properly positioned grounding hook. A low-impedance discharge point (less than 0.1 (omega)) should be used and marked with a yellow circular marker.

The grounding hooks should be adjusted with these low-impedance areas during safe access. The low-impedance points must be provided with the HI Z current-limiting points. Voltage indicators that are visible normally to access points are provided.


Choosing the correct capacitor for your microwave oven is a must. If there is any default on your capacitor, it can be very harmful to your microwave oven. There is another chance that the capacitor will make your oven worst if the capacitor is not good.

The most important thing is the quality of the capacitor. The capacitor that costs less can save the microwave sometimes, but it is a temporary solution. So it is very important to select a good capacitor whether it is costly.
