Microwave ovens play a quite important role in our daily busy lives in heating foods.  But have you ever thought that magnets play a very important role in microwave ovens? Have you ever thought about whether a microwave has magnets? Let’s find out.

Can A Microwave Have Magnets

Can A Microwave Have Magnets?

Usually, there are two magnets inside a magnetron inside the microwave oven. These magnets are used to guide electrons to heat food.

The first thing to get the magnets in real is an old microwave. Preferably one, that doesn’t work. So you can get it for free. Cut the cord off to eliminate the possibility of plugging it in. Before cutting the cord, make sure the microwave is unplugged.

The first thing you have to do is take every screw out of this microwave that you can find on the outside. Every microwave is a little different. So you have to look all the way around it to find every one of them and in this case, if you take a star slotted screw and if you don’t have a star wrench! Use a cut-off grinder to cut the heads off. Also, you can use a drill driver to take the rest of the screws out.

Take the door off by opening it as far as it’ll go, until it snaps. Then it comes right off. Take the screws completely out of the back in the bottom all over the thing. Now, the hood part ought to just come right off. Try to see what’s inside.

Look at the guts of the microwave. Here’s where it all happens. Right down, you see the capacitor. That’s a very dangerous thing to mess with. Now, I’m going to tell you how to sort it out. But if you’ve never done this, or at least don’t know what you’re doing, don’t mess with it. It’s not worth it and stays away from it.

If you know what you’re doing, you can sort it out using a couple of screwdrivers. The capacitor may hold a charge even if the microwave has been unplugged for a while.

On the microwave, you can see the capacitor is hooked to the fan housing. Which is pretty easy to just pull out of there. When you mess around with any of that area around the capacitor, always use something like a pair of pliers or in some cases use some wire cutters with insulated grips to it. It will just help to prevent getting shocked.

The way you can sort the capacitor out is, to take two screwdrivers in each terminal and cross them, touch them. Sometimes you’ll hear a loud pop. But in this case, it will seem to be already safe. But you shouldn’t still trust it. So, don’t mess with them. Keep your hands off of it and set it aside.

Let’s try to see where the magnets are!

Where Are The Magnets In A Microwave?

The magnetron is in the silver box. Take that off and it won’t look too hard. So wherever there’s a screw, take the screw out. There can be nuts, take a wrench to pull it out. Now, start clipping wires to remove the rest of the stuff to make it easier to get to the magnetron.

As you can see, you’ve cleared all the screws from the magnetron and if you look over to the side, you can see there are two magnets and that’s what we’re trying to get out to take this off. You can see there are screws holding it on each side. Take those off and it should just come right down.

So what you should do is put the magnetron and vice versa. It’s really good where you can get to those magnets. Now, you’re going to take the housing off. As you can see, there are tabs that secure the housing together.

So what I suggest doing is to take some channel locks. And put them in the housing and then just pull. Do that all the way around the magnetron casing. On each side, pull those tabs out. Getting out one magnet is quite easy.

But the next one’s a little harder to take out. I’ll tell you what to do is get a screwdriver and just start prying until the screw breaks loose and just this kind of goes all the way around it. Here you go! This little magnet comes out and here you have the two magnets.

Every microwave is different by the manufacturer. To make an experiment, always try to find a simple one to take apart. Some are more complex but now you know the anatomy of a microwave. The larger microwaves have larger magnets and smaller ones have smaller magnets.

How Strong Are Microwave Magnets?

The magnetron, the heart of the microwave, is between 2 ring-shaped magnets which creates an almost linear magnet field causing the electrons to travel between the cathode and the anode in a circular path.

Each microwave has two magnets used in the magnetron. This is an open-framed device with some aluminum cooling fins attached to the cooking cavity behind the control panel. Even the small microwaves have two 2″ diameter X 3/8 ceramic magnets in them.

Is There A Strong Magnet In A Microwave?

Don’t let a magnet or metal get inside your microwave. Most people might argue that the microwave has magnets in the magnetron that help direct the electrons to heat foods once you turn on the appliance.

It’s not because of the magnet’s magnetic field alone, but the fact that it is a metal. Metals are such good conductors.

What Appliances Have Magnets?

From home appliances such as the refrigerator, microwave oven, and electric fan, to your company’s office equipment such as computers and printers. All these devices use magnets.

Is It Safe To Remove A Magnet From The Microwave?

If you remove the magnetron and attempt to disassemble it as many hobbyists do to remove the magnets, make sure you do not in any way crack, scrape, saw, or damage the protruding ceramic insulators which contain Beryllium oxide which is a serious carcinogen if the dust is inhaled.

What Are Magnets In A Microwave Good For?

Is It Worth Replacing A Microwave Magnetron?

No matter how new your microwave is or if there’s only one problem, if the magnetron is out then you might as well replace the entire appliance.

The magnetron is the heart of a microwave that makes the microwaves. Replacing it is about equal to the cost of buying a whole new microwave, sometimes even greater.

Are There Electromagnets In Microwaves?

What is Microwave Radiation? Microwaves are a form of “electromagnetic” radiation; that is, they are waves of electrical and magnetic energy moving together through space.

Electromagnetic radiation spans a broad spectrum from very long radio waves to very short gamma rays.

How Do You Make A Microwave Electromagnet?

Step 1: Get a Microwave.

Step 2: Take the Microwave Apart.

Step 3: Discharge the Capacitor.

Step 4: Remove the Transformer.

Step 5: Gather the Required Hand Tools to Open the Transformer.

Step 6: Locate and Cut Along the Weld Lines.

Step 7: Pry Apart As Necessary.

Step 8: Remove the Primary Coil.
